An overview of this role

Credit-based and consumption-based offerings are becoming central to how GitLab monetizes. The systems that meter, rate, and bill that consumption sit underneath all of it. You'll own the backend usage billing pipeline and its product direction while supporting the Monetization Platform and Infrastructure team as it modernizes the foundations underneath it.

When another GitLab team launches a credit-consuming capability, you'll help them make it billable across GitLab.com, self-managed, and GitLab Dedicated. This is a technical, systems-oriented product role: success means building a monetization platform other teams can launch on quickly and correctly, rather than shipping customer-facing UI.

What you’ll do

• Own the product direction for metering, aggregation, and rating in GitLab's usage billing pipeline, including the Zuora and CustomersDot integrations that turn usage into invoiced revenue.

• Make onboarding a new credit-consuming capability a repeatable process rather than a bespoke project each time.

• Partner with product teams on what to instrument, how to meter and price usage across GitLab.com, self-managed, and GitLab Dedicated, and what it takes to be billable on launch day. Stay ahead of their roadmaps so billing doesn't delay launches.

• Prioritize pipeline scalability, performance, and reliability as consumption grows, balancing those investments against new capability enablement.

• Own billing defect detection and remediation so errors surface before they reach a customer's invoice and billing outcomes remain auditable.

• Support the Monetization Platform and Infrastructure team by framing problems, explaining the value of platform investments, and prioritizing them against operational risk.

• Define and track measures of billing accuracy, pipeline reliability, cost to serve per capability, and time to monetize so teams can make informed pricing decisions.

What you’ll bring

• Experience owning the product direction of consumption- or usage-based billing systems.

• Experience with Zuora or a comparable billing and revenue platform, and an understanding of how product and finance systems interact.

• Experience with prepaid, commitment, or credit-drawdown pricing models (balances, reservations, overage, expiration) and the edge cases they create in billing and revenue.

• Experience launching new products or pricing models while coordinating across engineering, Finance, Legal, Compliance and go-to-market teams.

• Ability to bring together teams you don't manage around work their launches depend on.

• Experience defining problems for platform or backend teams whose users are often other teams.

• Clear written communication in an all-remote, asynchronous environment; you'll use issues, epics, and direction pages to lead.

• Familiarity with developer tooling, financial audit or revenue recognition, or an engineering background can help, but isn't required.

• You use AI tools as part of how you work: prototyping, analysis, spec writing, and investigation.

In Monetization, we coordinate across engineering, Finance, Legal, Compliance and go-to-market on new products and pricing models. Our remote, asynchronous work uses written issues, and epics to keep decisions visible.
